Obituary for Richard Ivan Dean

Richard Ivan Dean
Richard I. Dean, 85, of Ephrata, passed away on Friday, March 16, 2018, at his residence.

He was born in West Beaver Springs to the late John I. and Myrtle H. (Fultz) Dean and was the husband of Filitea (Poretta) Dean.

Richard entered college in 1951, where he met his wife Filitea and they married in June of 1955. He was drafted into the US Army in 1953, serving two years. He graduated from the State Teachers College in Lock Haven with a degree in physical education in 1957. He then went on to earn a Master’s degree in Education from Bucknell University in 1961.
He started teaching Physical Education at BCI High School in Coalport, PA. There he coached Varsity Basketball and Baseball. He also started the football program for BCI. He was President of the local Lions Club in Coalport.
In 1964, Richard and his wife both began teaching at Ephrata High School. He was the Head Wrestling and Baseball Coach, and was an assistant coach in Football and Basketball. He also was the Head Coach for the Ephrata Legion team. He was active in the Ephrata Jaycees, serving as president. He was in charge of the Miss Lancaster County Pageant in 1997.
The Ephrata Lions Club honored him as the unofficial founder of the Adopt A Highway Maintenance program for collecting aluminum cans on local highways. The Lions Club planted a tree in the Ephrata Township Park in memory of his daughter Parma.
He was inducted into the Ephrata High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2017. He was a member of OMPH church for over 50 years, serving as one of the original ministers of communion.
Richard loved mentoring young men, but his greatest joy came from being with his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He led our family with kindness, compassion and unselfish love. He had a way of blessing everyone he met, and we will sorely miss him.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by a daughter, Victoria E., wife of William Woosley of Loveland, OH; a son, David B., husband of Kathy (Maenza) Dean of Mohnton; 8 grandchildren, Matthew R., husband of Jennifer (Hildebrandt) Zoll of Lancaster; Stephanie D., wife of D.
